    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?

    • I was given my own project to work on that lasted the entire 3 month placement. The work was interesting, challenging & I learned a lot, but by the end of the placement I wish that I could've done something else for a little variety.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?

    • The feedback was always positive, and I was made to feel that the work I was doing was worthwhile and truly beneficial to the team/company. This included having to present my project to quite senior members within the company; who's feedback was also positive.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?

    • Both my manager and my supervisor were very approachable and helpful. They were happy to take time to help me or answer my questions if I had them, or organise 1:1 meetings to discuss things. They were supportive in me going on beneficial training courses.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?

    • Fairly busy, although my week mostly consisted of working on my own project, with only occasional teem meetings or presentations to break that up.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?

    • The direction of my project, particularly during the early stages, was strongly driven by my supervisor, which was necessary due to the nature of my work - a model/simulation tool that was constantly changing/being enhanced. However, as I became more comfortable with the work, I took on more and more responsibility; including meeting people from other teams and collaborating to further the model.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?

    • My time was spent using Excel, Matlab and Simulink and so my proficiency with these programmes improved greatly, particularly for Simulink which I had never used before. I also got to go on two two-day training courses with Mathworks for Matlab & Simulink. The training would normally cost around £1000 and as it was something that was very beneficial to me for my project, but also for when I return to uni, I was grateful for that experience.

    • People were always friendly, approachable and good to talk to. Also, samosa day was absolutely divine.

    • People were always friendly, approachable and good to talk to. Also, samosa day was absolutely divine.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?

    • I was given the opportunity to go on two two-day training courses with MathWorks for trianing on Matlab and Simulink. It was very helpful, and unusually good investment from the company seeing as the training cost about £1000 for all 4 days.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?

    • I've enjoyed my time with the company and could see a graduate job being really good. Especially with the placements in different areas that you get on the grad scheme. The grads I've spoken to all seem to be enjoying their work.

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?

    • I commuted from home, whereas most of the interns all live together in Liberty halls so I can't really comment on this. But I know that the other interns really enjoy living together.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?

    • The place had a very cheap night out! And there is a good shopping centre/cinema/gym etc.

    • Few bars and pubs.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?

    • Not really. I'm not sure what you can expect for the company to put on outside of work for people that are only there for 3 months though
