The Role
It has been the most worthwhile experience of my university course to date. It has done wonders for my confidence and communication skills and has given me a fantastic preparation for getting a graduate job. It was also great to earn some money!
All my colleagues were all very welcoming and it didn't take long to be given some genuinely meaningful projects.
Support was always there when required and I worked very closely with my supervisor. After many years of running the scheme, all undergraduate supervisors understand the needs and support requirements, meaning their expectations are realistic.
Naturally there were peaks and troughs in work load, but it was always manageable and I always felt I had something to get on with.
Again, there was a perfect balance. I got a lot of experience chairing meetings and co-ordinating certain tasks, but the expectations were never too high.
My transferable skills have really developed, communication and time management skills to only name two. I have also learned a great deal about manufacturing processes, helping for future related modules. My experiences and the projects that I've worked on will also be great to talk about in future job applications.
The Company
It was a great working environment, a perfect balance between professional and relaxed. I worked with some great people and enjoyed every day I came to work.
Vauxhall's long experience with placement schemes means they are very well organised. There are HR UGs to purely look after the undergraduate scheme so there is a lot of time spent on refining it. The handover period at the start of the scheme is very useful to get to know your job role and get to know all your colleagues and really helps you settle in. There is even support to find a house for the year.
I recieved valuable presentation training, a safe driving workshop, excel training, and interview training. The interview training will be especially useful when it comes to securing a graudate job!

Although there aren't dozens of graduate jobs up for grabs every year, if you impress, they will want you back.
The Culture
Many events were organised throughout the year. With 75 undergraduates in the same area, it was like continuining at university.
There were student nights and discounts in the area as the University of Bedford is based very close.
Always things going on in town, opportunites for a sucessful night out!
Vauxhall has their own football team, and there were also charity events such as the London to Brighton cycle ride.
