The Role
I thought that my placement as a whole was very valuable. I had a chance to develop my skills during my placement, by working with other departments such as Marketing, Customer Care even though I was in the IT Department.
When starting my placement at Vauxhall, my colleagues here were very welcoming and friendly. I felt trusted, as they really gave me work that would make a difference to the organization. I do feel that my contribution has been important as they always let me know how much they appreciate the work I do.
I thought that the support and guidance given by the management when I first started, and throughout my placement was excellent. Whenever I needed help, my manager would be all ears, answering my queries. Vauxhall also held a mentoring programme were they set up a mentor (who would be a full-time employees) for you to talk about the problems you were having etc...
I had enough work to keep me busy, and when I had finished the work I had to do, and asked for more, they were more than happy to accomodate and were happy that I was keeping busy. When the work got too much, and I felt stressful, the management team always had back-up so that the work was equally shared.
At the beginning of the placement, I was quite shocked at how much responsibility you actually get. I had oppurtunities to manage a project at one point, and got given extremely important tasks.
The skills I gained were mostly, communication skills, presentation skills, professionalism, time mamagement and I would have to say the main one was really enhancing my planning and organizational skills. I would say the experience and skills, I have gained here, would definitely help me secure a graduate job in the future.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was always helpful, friendly, and most of all very fun!
I thought that the open days, the handover period all went very well. It gave us all a chance to meet each other, we had our housing sorted out before we started our placements which was great, and one less thing to stress about
I had quite a few training during my placement here at Vauxhall. This included Safe Driving, Excel Training, Presentation Training, Requirement Gathering Training and many more
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Working from home
Although they do not offer undergraduates job offers straight after they finish their placement, Vauxhall Motors, however, do only employee graduates that have been on their placement year.
The Culture
I thought there was a wide range of things to do in Luton, as well as being close to places such as london, watford, st albans and milton keynes
I would say that the cost of living and socialising in the area was reasonable. The rent was fairly cheap - £275 per month. and then socializing, about another 100 or so each month, which left plenty from your paycheck
It wasnt too bad. we were quite close to other places such as st albans, harpenden, london and milton keynes
There were quite a few opportunities to get into different actiivites outside of work such as going to the gym, joining Vauxhall's running club
