The Role
I've been lucky enough to be placed in effect two job roles during my time at vauxhall. for the 1st 9 months i was in a development heavy role which effective used my computer science background. Working on
My department as a whole from day one made me feel like a member of the team from day one. I was worried
Well there are two different areas, I see day to day guidance from co-workers/managers and then the personal support to ensure I was happy during placement. MY manager during my 1st job role was brilliant, he understood that I needed some time to get to grips with the new programming language and the systems and frameworks DST used. He’d always tried to give the team clear instructions whenever he was able to. During my 2nd role the management was poor, partly due to the multiply leadership changes that happened within IT in such a short period & that our manager seemed not to overly try to engage with myself, my line manager in that role was much better with me & other placement students allocated in that domain. From a personal support angle every placement student is assigned a mentor. My mentor was decent guy. I didn’t need to reach out often. But he was invaluable when I wanted to get more info about real time systems, when researching ideas about my final year project. GM has a system called CAP which is useful as it sets your targets for the year and you can refer to them mid-year with your manager & if need be make corrections.
I was kept busy during my placement. My development role there was daily tasks and development projects I was working on. I would say I never felt overwhelmed by my workload as I had the support and guidance from my co-worker who enable me to overcome issue & side step them before they became a problem. The daily issue that came up from the business was varied and kept everything fresh. Most importantly it was challenging so It maintained my natural engagement levels. My 2nd role like flash flooding work load wise. But it was understandable as the domain was newly created and senior management had high expectations. At least during the quite time I could get one with university related work & make progress with the projects I carried on nursing from my old role.

The Company
It was good. Everyone is inviting, the building needs a refit.
Overall well. Had open days before starting enabling you to break the ice before starting. The 1st two weeks during handover their was a really good social schedule. Site tours were also really good. The housing support from Vauxhall was 2nd to none.
Well we had excel raining, good for getting to grips with office 2013. Had loads of things i found the presentations skill training to be of most benefit to myself.
