The Role
I enjoyed my placement year at General Motors because of the variety of projects that I worked on. I was based in the Global End User Experience section of the IT department and was responsible for developing applications within Microsoft SharePoint. In addition, I had the opportunity to take part in a career's event at Kingston University where I spoke confidently to students concerning placements and the benefits of taking a year to do a placement. Furthermore, I was involved in other activities such as the opportunity to take part in London to Brighton 2014 and opportunities to visit England Training sessions and have the chance to win tickets to see England play in Wembley. Overall it has been a good experience and I truly enjoyed it.
I felt really valued as the work that I did was used within the business. Working here is like being employed in real life and your are given real responsibilities and duties and are trusted to use your initiative to perform well in the working environment. You have access to your direct manager, personal mentor and help from colleagues around the globe.
Support was provided at early stages during my placement but as the support team became focus on upcoming tasks and project, support soon shrunk and I find myself Googling most of my questions. But overall it wasn't bad.
I was fairly busy each day. There was always something to do and there wouldn't be a day when you will be left idle. If you're not working to meet the deadline of a project, you will definitely get a call from someone asking for support on their SharePoint site. So you will be kept busy at all times.
I was given a lot of responsibility during the course of my placement year. The projects that I worked on contributed directly to the business and I'm glad to announce that I was able to successfully design and develop and application which is currently being used by the Engineering Team in Germany. You're responsible for every project that you're assigned to or any small troubleshooting on a SharePoint site. Not necessary running the show but the work you do is beneficial someway to the company and the responsibility given reflect the job role that you're doing.
The skills developed will be utilized greatly in my final year of university. Leadership skills, analytical skills, team working skills, communication skills, SharePoint Development Skills and other technical skills such as coding in JQuery, JavaScript and writing CAML Query are all skills that I can utilized somewhere along my degree or in future career. It was truly worthwhile, this placement at General Motors.
The Company
It was fairly quiet each day at the office but it was a friendly atmosphere when everyone is in a chatting mood. I guess most people wanted to focus on their work and get it done hence why it was really silent most of the time.
The overall placement was fairly organised but it could've been improved. It took awhile for me to be setup and running on the company servers but after that everything run smoothly. We received lots of training such as presentation training, and Safe Driving training, therefore it was fairly setup well.
Besides the online General Motors University site which contains lots of training information for your own personal development and other training sessions running monthly on skills for life and other business skills that can be acquired here at General Motors, we were giving a presentation training and Safe driving training that were recommended and part of my placement period. My manager encouraged me from time to time to participate in leadership skills and also watch Ted videos to help expand our thinking and learning.
