The Role
Really enjoyed the projects I was given to do. An excellent mixture of technical IT work combined with understanding the business implications of introducing new systems.
Everyone made me feel welcome instantly. The graduates on site were really friendly and invited me out to social events, so it was still similar to the uni experience.
My manager was really supportive of projects and always knew what to do in the situations I found myself stuck in. He's an extremely busy man so it was sometimes difficult to get in touch but he always delivered great advice in the end.
Most of the time I had just the right amount of work to do. Some days I was kicking my heels slightly and others I was rushed off my feet but I expect this is the usual case with any job so I was really pleased.
I was given a fairly large amount of responsibility. Even though I wasn't officially the project manager, I found myself managing projects quite often.
I have learnt so much in my 12 months at GE. I think it's safe to say that my technical and business knowledge has expanded far beyond my university experiences.
The Company
The office was sometimes quite quiet but there was time for joking about when everyone was in. It think it was a good balance as it meant I could still get on with working.
I had a few problems when I first started, such as my laptop not being ready etc. but once I had all my kit I was away and working straight away.
I did a fair amount of training. Not that much that is relevant to outside GE though.

I am currently applying for the graduate scheme, which is sourced from the current intern's first so I have a higher chance than the general public!
The Culture
I was the only full time IT intern on site but I still got to socialize with the guys on the graduate scheme. We usually went out once a fortnight.
Cheltenham was about average price so I was able to go out almost as often as I liked. It wasn't as cheap as university but student nights will always be the cheapest!
Cheltenham's nightlife is ok. There aren't as many bars/clubs as the city I lived in before or my hometown but there's still enough to enjoy.
There wasn't that much going on outside of work but I found that my housemates were keen to do stuff at the weekend anyway.
