About You
The insight was an extremely fun experience. I did not think that working at a company like Sky would be that fun. The staff members from every department I visited were extremely affable people with a great sense of humour who also worked hard.
I think 'like family' is the best description. By the end of the insight everyone knew my name off by heart, and I knew all of their's. My opinions and questions were valued. My work was also used for official client projects which was an added benefit.
I received a fair amount of guidance. This guidance was mostly related to the actual work I was doing at Sky, rather than general career advice. More of the latter would have been nice. That said, the support I did receive is somewhat transferable to other jobs.
As mentioned before, the skills I received were somewhat transferable to other contexts. A lot of what I did was purely related to the media industry and the sorts of clients you would see there, rather than other industries. I would like to enter the media industry though so it was useful.
The Company
The structuring of the insight was absolutely brilliant. There was never a dull moment. I always had something to do. The best thing was that nothing what overly repetitive, everything was varied and generally interesting.
The atmosphere was exceptional. everyone was very kind and supportive and were funny too. My mentor was particularly caring and made sure that I was supported every step of the way.
The firm invested quite a lot in my work. They hired many speakers to give talks about motivation. They also invested in many material goods too. I received free pens, mouse mats, stationary, mugs etc.
I was performing the duties of a full time employee. With that said, I truly did understand what it is like to be an employee there. Indeed, my experiences make me want to work there in the future, which is definitely a possibility thanks to the contacts I have made.
Just being immersed and surrounded by people from the firm helped me to understand the company culture. This is primarily because they are the ones who you would be working with if you were to work at the firm. I also managed to ask personal questions to a few employees, which helped in understanding.
Everything Else
I was not paid or reimbursed expenses.
I was surrounded by employees the entire time. This gave me plenty of contact time and made sure that I could get my questions answered by everyone.
There were one or two mixers for graduates that I was allowed to attend. This provided the perfect opportunity to meet new contacts. I was also doing this on a day-to-day basis just by rotating departments.
This was only done briefly through word of mouth and talking to employees. I still managed to get the information I needed. Perhaps in the future this could be intergrated into the program itself.
I would definitely recommend this insight to a friend, especially if they want to enter a media-related industry like TV or broadcasting. Sky is one of the best firms to gain experience from if this is the case and will act as a jewel on anyone's CV.
