About You
I was questioning whether to get into accounting prior to this placement. However, having done it, I can say that I definitely want to pursue accounting in the future because I absolutely loved this placement!
Everything I had to say was listened to, even though it may not always have been taken on board because it was not particularly suitable. The team I was part of made me feel right at home from day one. They even threw a party for me on my leaving!
My supervisor was full of support right from the get go. She helped me not only with the work I was supposed to do but was great in answering questions.
I think the skills that I learnt will be useful in almost any accounting career. Use of tabulation features in Excel and insider information about the chartered accountants' professional qualification were great.
The Company
The insight was very well structured. There was good variety in what I had to do. Rotation of clients was also particularly smooth.
As mentioned previously, the team really did become family. I still maintain contact with people I met there today. Very friendly and willing to socialise.
They provided me with all the skills I would need as an accountant in a full time job. They also made sure that I was progressing, so I had weekly meetings with my supervisor to check on this and to make sure I was on track.
There was a clear emphasis on this from the beginning. I got immersed in corporate life and saw exactly what Deloitte accountants do on a daily basis. I got to do a lot that myself!
Again, there was a clear emphasis on this from the beginning. I got immersed in corporate life. I also got to have lunch with employees, which made me understand the ethos of the employees' in general. Would have been nice to have been there slightly longer though.
Everything Else
I was paid the standard intern salary rate.
I was invited to the team outing. This was a typical corporate-style teambuilding and trust building day. Very enjoyable and was a good insight into corporate development initiatives.
There were no networking opportunities as such during the placement. I have been invited to one though in the future.
I heard about this from time to time through word of mouth - nothing official. This was still sufficient to get an idea of what one can do whilst at the firm, however.
If you want to work at Deloitte or be an accountant generally, this is the placement to do. It is also great for the CV and will provide valuable experience for exams.
