The Role
I really enjoyed my 12 months internship as I was given real responsibility, meaningful projects and felt I had a business impact. I do however think it depends on the manager you get.
In the office I was in, there is a lack of companionship.
My manager was a fantastic mentor and teacher. Learning from her has given me high standards to reach, every time and given me a great base to begin my career.
I had very busy periods and days where I could focus on my own development and learning. However, I do know interns in my office who were bored on a daily basis, so I feel the "luck" factor, which manager you get, really affects the quality of your placement.
I think the level of responsibility was the highlight of my placement, but again, I know the variation between interns was high, always dependent on your manager.
The level of attention to detail I developed, time management and business accument is going to prove invaluable in my career. It's a great base to kickstart any career, and GE is a great company to have on your CV.
The Company
I have to say the atmosphere in the office was the worst part of the internship, there is very little "fun" and very little focus on creating an enjoyable working environment. Additionally the competition between managers is high and the politics this creates can sometimes be unpleasant.
Generally ok but I was left to find my feet alone, very little "introduction" training on office basics (which I would personally expect when entering an office environment for the first time ever".
Training is high on the priority list for GE so I think the level of training available is good.
Subsidised Canteen
Above 25 days holiday
Healthcare/Dental
While a job with a multinational organisation like GE is appealing, there is very very little opportunity to actually stay within GE due to the very few (if any) entry level roles in GE Healthcare in (marketing). I think this is not made clear enough when recruiting, it is a fixed term contract only.
The Culture
No social scene really, but often hard to combine it when working in an office very much occupied by the older generation.
I didn't live in the area, but it is relatively expensive as it is a suburb of london.
There is very little nightlife in the immediate area. But of course if you travel for half an hour there is watford..
I did hear of a 5 a side football team but apart from that there is very little focus for outside activities. The volunteering is badly organised.
