The Role
I got a great role that fit my strengths and skills.
Everyone in IBM is very approachable and friendly. I have forged some good friendships in my team.
In the Industrial Placement Scheme, you get two managers: A personal development manager that manages your long term development, and a task manager that manages your day to day activities. Both managers gave great support and backing for everything that I did.
My role had both busy and quiet periods, but I have never felt too overwhelmed or bored.
After demonstrating my skills/abilities I was given a lot of responsibility to work on projects. I had a great deal of autonomy, being treated like a full time employee and working on important projects.
This experience has been as valuable, if not more valuable than my university degree. I have learnt a great deal of practical knowledge and gained a massive amount of experience in just one year. This placement has given me many things to talk about in interviews/boards.
The Company
My office was quite quiet as a lot of my team worked remotely, however they were all really friendly and nice. But having said that, there is a great placement community that is always up to something.
The on-boarding process was long and laborious. The communication could be improved, but I had no major issues. Once in it was good.
There are lots of opportunities for internal education and development in IBM. Courses in all kinds of skills are available including business analysis, programming and public speaking. The only caveat is, that quite often you have to go looking for these opportunities - but they are definitely there! There are also other opportunities to learn about the company and explore other roles for deciding on returning after your degree.

Working from home
Having a year on the placement scheme really helps when it comes to recruitment of graduates.
The Culture
There are events and activities organised all year round by placement students.
I worked at Hursley and lived in Southampton. Southampton, being a student town, is reasonably cheap, with the added benefit of cheap housing.
Student town - Jesters - Need I say more!
Loads of opportunities to work on "Giveback", which is IBM's umbrella for work outside your normal job. This could be anything on working on inventions/patents to charity work to teaching at your local school (I did this)
