    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Although some of the work was boring and repetitive, my team compensated for this by creating an enjoyable environment, and balancing the boring aspects of my work with interesting projects, challenges and tasks.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was frequently told that I was useful, helpful and provided value to the team.

    3/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager and I worked very closely both on the work required, and also in regards to my development needs. We had frequent meetings discussing my progress, and during these meetings I felt able to voice my desires for new experiences, which were then fulfilled 99% of the time. If I had areas of concern or questions, my manager responded promptly and efffectively to achieve the desired result.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was constantly challenged, and never had nothing to do!! When there were fewer daily tasks, particularly during the early part of my placement before the recruitment cycle had begun, I was given large research projects and problem solving activities.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was initially assigned many responsibilities at the start of my placement, and as I settled into the placement and the team and I got to know each other better, I was given more responsibility. I certainly had ownership of several important aspects.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I think working anywhere teaches certain soft skills which can be transferred back to University. For myself, I developed my motivation and self-discipline. Having a manager expecting results from you is very different to working on your own steam at University where there is no individual relying on good results from work. I had tried to transfer that back to University. I didn't receive any specific training on topics relevant to my degree, however I shadowed several personnel who were in more senior positions than myself, as theirs is the role I would like after graduation. This enabled me to gain a view of the type of work I could perform in that area of HR, and has helped to put some of the theory we are taught at University into context.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office was relatively small, and the team even smaller so we were able to get to know each other well. The atmosphere was fun and lively, but with a strong working ethic.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • My manager was very supportive, and allowed me to experience things that aren't automatically available. I think there should be a more structured placement programme, which allows research projects, presentations and shadowing.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I attended the graduate induction programme as well as all other industrial placement students. These 4 days were fantastic and very informative. There was also a mid-year placement day for all students as well to review our progress. Compared to other companies however, for my particular role I didn't receive as much training in comparison.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • For my particular career path (HR) there are not great prospects for growth. However once I have achieved the level of HR Manager, I would be interested to go back to Logica.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Within the geographical areas (baring in mind we were scattered across the country) yes. We also integrated very well with the huge graduate population of the company making a student scene at work which was brilliant. In London, about 30 of us went out each month to ceclebrate being paid and generally mingle with each other.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Central London is very expensive. I commuted from South Hertfordshire which took 40 minutes to get from my flat to my desk, and cost approx £2000 per year on the train. Socialising is expensive, however as I was by a London University there were a few student bars with lower prices.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • See question 12 - brilliant!

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes. Logica have a sports and social club where if you can find 5 other Logica employees who want to do the same as you (ice skating, learning a language, a dance class, cookery, wine tasting etc etc) the company will heavily subsidise this for you. Chairing these clubs is heavily encouraged and has the incentive of whoever chairs the cllub attends for free.
