The Role
The internship was a brilliant experience. I learnt so much valuable knowledge during the 6 weeks which will stay with me forever. It was made even better by an incredible intro week (which included an evening of bowling and a fantastic CSR day) and a wonderful send off at a fantastic country house located in central London!
As soon as I met the team I was to be working with for the duration of the internship I felt very welcome. All of my team were very helpful whenever I encountered any problems.
Each intern is assigned a manager. This is in order for each intern to raise any problems they may have and to ensure that you are getting the most out of the internship. I got on very well with my manager, working with him on a project for the majority of my time at EY.
My internship was in Transactions Support. This meant that work was very varied in terms of task for me to do. For half of the internship I focussed on one transaction which was fascinating. However, I joined the Restructuring team for 1 week towards the beginning of my internship because the Transaction Support team were in between jobs. This allowed me to gain an insight into another service line which was a great experience and ensured that I was very rarely left with no work to be getting on with.
For half of the internship I worked on one project. We were completing the due diligence on a business that was soon to be acquired. I worked on this project with 3 of my colleagues and felt that I was given a significant amount of responsibility. This was evident when the project was nearing completion as I was able to see my contribution in the final report.
Being a second year student studying accountancy at university, it was a very good opportunity to put my knowledge from my studies into practice. An example of this was when looking at the financial statements of a company we were working on, I was able to identify the positives and negatives of the business. The internship also helped my skills for life as I gained experience on what it is like to work in an office environment.
The Company

I felt that in terms of organisation the internship from start to finish was faultless. Before the placement had even begun I was sent several booklets of information. These included details of what activities we were set to undertake and where during the intro week, and information about the final event.
During the first week we were given IT training so we were familiar with the computer software we were to be using. However, I didn't expect much personal training since the internship is only 6 weeks long.

The week after I had finished the internship I received a call from EY graduate recruitment offering me a place on their graduate scheme for September 2014 which I was more than happy to accept.
The Culture
A lot of socialising occurred during the intro week with a dodge ball tournament and bowling evening taking place.
I lived at home during the internship and commuted in to Manchester costing about £10 a day.
I did not go out much during the internship, but Manchester does have a great nightlife!
Due to the internship lasting only 6 weeks it was hard to get involved in activities outside of work. However, I believe that there are many opportunities available to full time employees which I hope to get involved in next year.
