The Role
Really good fun. The work is very varied and I worked on a number of different projects, both technical and non-technical. The office environment is great, plenty of young graduates too with a lot of sports and activity organised outside work.
For each project you are part of the team just like anybody else.
I had monthly meetings with my staff manager which allowed me to make sure I was achieving what I wanted to get out of the year, or to voice any concerns about the work I was doing.
Mostly I was busy, but it fluctuates. When there is a deadline approaching you tend to work harder, and other times you can be caught in between projects with little to do, but this would only last for a day or two at max.
A lot. As Atkins is a consultancy it is quite client focused, so most of the work I did was at some point submitted to the client. This included writing reports and calculations, delivering presentations and organising meetings with the clients. As you are part of a project team just as anybody else you are expected to deliver just as anybody else!
I don't know yet, but probably a bit as I did some work on Fracture Mechanics, Stress Analysis and also used Finite Element packages and MathCad.
The Company
Really fun office, everybody is very friendly and there are plenty of events and sports to get involved in. There is a 'sports and social' club that organises a subsidised event per month - which include a beer festival, go karting, ghost walk, par 3 golf etc. Cricket nets, 5 aside football, badmington are organised weekly, and quite a few people also play golf too. It is a very young office aswell with quite a proportionately large graduate intake every year.
No problems really
Any training I had was the same for anybody in the office - you get it when and if your project requires you to have it. However, the projects I was assigned to were roughly tailored to meet what I said I wanted to get experience on. I did also have a performance review and development objectives to meet throughout the year.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
I think the graduate application is fast tracked through a lot of the graduate recruitment stages.
The Culture
Most of the graduates live in/close to Derby and people generally want to do things out of work
Derby isn't the most expensive place in the world
There are bars, 'clubs' and many many pubs.
Plenty.
