The Role
A very enjoyable year and definitely worth doing.
Within my department I was regularly asked to complete work for them, which made me feel both part of the team and also that I was valued by them.
Support and guidance was given when needed, however most of the time I was left to get on with my work.
Due to the nature of the job, there were some quite quiet periods. Due to this, there were times when I felt I could have been more productive.
One thing I very much liked at Vauxhall was the responsibility to get on with your work without constant checking up on. This could be seen as a negative if you aren't conscientious enough, but it wasn't a problem for me.
The skills and contacts I made at Vauxhall are invaluable, and will most definitely help in my applications to graduate schemes and jobs.
The Company
It was a very friendly and approachable atmosphere within the office which made it easy to discuss work if necessary.
The overall placement was very well organised, from start to finish.
At the very start there was some basic Excel training to help with the job role, however there was no follow up training to this to build on the skills that developed.
Chances of getting a job are slim, as very few graduates are taken on each year. However graduates are generally only taken on if they have completed the placement scheme, so this gives a better chance than any!
The Culture
Almost 100 undergrads all on placement certainly gave a good social aspect to the placement.
Luton was about average for living costs.
Luton not great, but Watford and London are both easy to get to on the train.
Plenty of opportunities were available, mainly charity focused such as the London to Brighton bike ride.
