The Role
The placement has been highly enjoyable mostly down to friendly people and real and challenging work.
all of my collegues were very understanding of times when I may not understand something whilst still making feel part of the team.
Help was not hard to come by during my placement. When I first started I was paired up with a sort of 'mentor' who would help me through any questions I had about the product or the frameworks I was using.
There is always work to do since we worked in line with agile methodology in the sense that we worked in 2 week sprints and did sprint planning at the end of each sprint. There was a list of task each sprint which were decided in planning that could be picked up and other than that there are always plenty of issues or stories in the backlog.
At first it was pretty guided but as I gained confidence in my role I was able to choose to some extent what I worked on and make judgements on how it should be done.
I learnt more about programming in one week of my placement than 2 years of university taught me.
The Company
A fairly relaxed yet professional atmosphere, especially in dev since there is no uniform really and everyone knows each other.
Never really had any issue, the occasional time were work was running dry never lasted long. I moved teams half way through the year with no issues at all.
Most learning happened on the job but I needed time to put aside for learning that was made available to me.
Company Parties/Events
Many placement students in the past have been offered jobs and there doesn't seem to be any reason for this to change.
The Culture
This is more down to the individual but I really enjoyed the company of my fellow interns and we would play table football most lunch breaks
Cost of living is OK if you look around and pubs aren't any more expensive than normal.
The nightlife is ok in newbury but I wouldn't expect anything special as its not exactly a big city. However reading has plenty going on.
there is an opportunity to get involved with teaching some secondary school kids through the use of lego robots.
