The Role
- A very busy job, more so than other placements I have heard - Every day I felt I was learning something new - Felt part of the team and I am able to talk and raise my own views both with management but also talk with an external supplier.
- My colleagues/team became very close friends - Feel valued by them all the time and given the freedom to voice my views which are sometimes taken up
- I have my own IDP (Independent Development Program) Manager which if my work load becomes high or need to speak to someone out side of my task role which can give a good objective view. - With my IDP manager I have the ability to set out my own devlopements which I seek to acheive - useful as this person looks at my development not just by daily role - However saying this my actual role is very busy and I have found at times, although I have a spesific IDP program and manager I have not been able to acheive all I wish on my development front - however having this external contact from outside my team and task managers is useful.
- On this scale I would choose close to rushed off my feet - Very busy - sometimes feel too busy. - This although very challanging and given me a good insight into real pressures in business - I did feel this limited the amount of time I could do my other responsibilities as a placement student, for example my disseration research and proposals. I am not able to do this during my working time due to how busy I am meaning Ive had to take holiday to complete all my uni work required. - The team I work in are extremely busy with an overload of emails which users complain and excaluate on our slow responses which although management supports us, we are under a high pressure to answer these as soon as possible which makes me feel I have to work as quickly as possible at times.
- Quite a high amount of responsibility, although we worked as a team (3 of us doing the same role supporting the recruitment system). - I also took over the role of updating the European staffing websites which meant I needed to keep on top of all the latest requests to ensure the external websites for recruitment reflected up to date information on places at IBM. - However if I felt I did not know the best course of action my team and management where there to support me and did not make me feel that I couldnt handle the responsibility, instead they tried to show me how to handle such siuations helping me to gain more responsibility in my role and daily work.
- This year I have learnt how to priortise my tasks at busy times, something which I beleive will help me in my final year at uni and for my future career at busy times! - How to handle urgent requests and complaints by internal customers - Teamwork skills have been greatly improved, continuously talking not one item I did in isolation and I really did learn how much easier tasks are to complete when working within a team.
The Company
- Although a proffessional place where people work hard, I have made many friends not just collaegues at work where we are able to have a laugh while working. Helping to make work more enjoable.
- Having two types of managers my IDP (invidual development program) manager, and my task managers. - this type of set up allowed me to focus on my develop (on what I wished to gain out of my year at IBM), but also my task manager to inform me of my progress wihtin the team and how I can improve / how well I am doing with my tasks.
- Monthly meetings with all HR interns where we would have someone from the business talk to us - for examples Sales talking about how to get into a sales career. But also other devleopment areas such as talks on body laungauge and presentation skills. - Ability to join the uni liason team where you can give presentations to unis to try and help recruit new students and graduates - help develop your presentation and confidence skills. - Vast resource of IBM training material which is avaliable within their intranet.
- I would need to re-apply if I wish to become a graduate and although by-pass part of the graduate recruitment procedure will still need to attend the assessment centres. - Would want to come back to IBM in the future as there is loads of different career opportunities and areas where you can develop yourself into new careers within the company.
The Culture
Loads of students across many sights, which gives the feel of although you are still at work, but still a student. Many events organised by students such as balls, parties, nights out etc
Althoug still in the south and expensive, much cheaper than living and going out in central london!
Being in portsmouth and close to a uni means there is plently of nightlife!
Many give back opportunities within IBM which you can get invovled with, and with the whole student feel meant we could organise our own activities.
