The Role
Great placement, was involved with a lot of good people and it helped me develop well as a person.
Everybody in the factory was very sociable, from managers right through to contractors.
It could vary throughout the year depending on operations. A lot of onus is put on you to make the most of the placement.
British Sugar are a very seasonal business by their nature and so there were some times of the year when things were very slow, yet sometimes when they were manic and stressful. However this is something that will never change at British Sugar.
Was given real, value adding projects to deliver that gave me real responsibility and accountability.
I had to deal with a lot of people, both contractors and workers in the factory who could sometimes be difficult but the skills I developed in handling them and still gaining success in my projects are skills I will always value.
The Company
All operational decisions were taken in my office as this is where all the managers sit hence it was a great place to be in order to keep up to date with what was going on.
It varied from factory to factory and often depended on your manager however the placement scheme as a whole was excellent.
I had a review every 3 months with my manager to make sure I was reaching my potential.
I did not get a place on the graduate scheme however a quarter of my year did.
The Culture
Made some excellent friends both with my housemates and others within the factory, was sad to leave everybody behind.
For some reason Downham Market was quite expensive for drinks but everything else; rent prices, food etc was about average.
There was a good social group we had amongst the placement students, graduates and apprentices so I thought the year was good however an honest opinion on the nightlife would be dire.
Again, a very rural sparsely populated area so not a lot do outside of work.
