The Role
The first 6 months were great as I was constantly learning and taking on new responsibilities, but towards the end my progression plateaued. Upon completion of my placement I have been offered a few more months work in a different department which should pose new challenges and regenerate my initial enthusiasm.
Everyone is really friendly and supportive. You are in no way treated like an intern, but just as any other employee. You're always kept well informed about what the company as a whole is doing and good performance is recognised and rewarded.
I was thrown straight into the job, and encouraged to use my own initiative, but colleagues were always happy to go through things when I was unsure and I was given an instruction manual for all the processes. I also had regular catch up meetings with my supervisor.
At the start I was allowed to take my time and get to grips with the job. As my competence increased, so did my responsibilities and workload. I've found that the middle of the month the workload is perfectly balanced, but the first and last weeks of the month can get a bit hectic!
I was very surprised by how much responsibility I was given as an intern. I have sole responsibility for UK, German and Dutch payment runs and have processed payments in excess of £70m. I also have sole responsibility for calculating all electric broker commission payments which is an expenditure of approximately £300k each month.
I'm not convinced my experience will help me much with my degree, but I believe the experience will be a massive advantage when looking for a graduate job.
The Company
People are always happy to chat and we organise competitions such as "super sevens" where we bet on that weekends football scores.
The scheme was well structured and every time I became comfortable with my workload something new was added and so I was constantly being stretched.
On the job training and regular one to one meetings to check progress.

I am staying on over the summer and will definitely consider a job there in the future.
The Culture
There are regular company events such as drinks after a quarterly update and Christmas party. In addition to this we also have regular team nights out.
I lived with parents so felt fairly wealthy and had decent disposable income. Cost of living in Manchester is about average.
I not a big fan of nightlife myself, but it's central Manchester!
There are five a side football games and some people did the Manchester 10k together.
