The Role
It was a challenging but enjoyable placement with a lot of opportunities that helped me develop as a person and as an IT professional. I really enjoyed the fact that I was able to work on a number of different projects and tasks which I learned from and built a network from.
This depends on your capabilities and how you can fit into your team and make a difference. I personally felt valued in my team and I knew I could reach out to any of them if I needed help or if I needed work to do.
If I had a problem or I needed help with something I could always reach out to a member of my team, my manager or anyone in the office. I had one-to-one meetings with my manager and other people in GE on a weekly/bi-weekly basis so there is always support available. If I couldn't find help within my circle I was even able to reach out to anyone in GE through internal social networks which always provided quick responses.
This is dependent on how you work and if you're able to prioritize. In the first few weeks of the internship I wasn't busy at all but things started picking up when you get given projects to work on.
Throughout your placement at GE you will get different types of opportunities to lead projects, be important members of projects or assist in projects. The responsibility is dependent on your capability as a person and how you can contribute. I was lucky enough to be a part of a variety of different projects, some I was just a team member and some I was leading. If you ask for more responsibility you will get it.
I know I have definitely developed more as a person from this placement. The key takeaway's are the skills you develop as part of your role and as a professional. I have learned a lot of people skills, communication skills, technical and gained a lot of confidence from presenting to various people. The training I received also helped me in my role and helped me as a person working in a large corporation and I know will help me in the future.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office varied day to day. Some days it was really quiet and some days it was really busy. The general atmosphere was fun because I had a lot of people to talk to if I needed a break.
The placement was definitely very well organised. Everything was coordinated correctly and I was on boarded efficiently.
The one thing to know about GE is they definitely invest in internships and graduate programmes. For my internship we got the chance to take ITIL training where we had training for 3 days then an exam. This was located away from the office so they put us up in a hotel with all expenses paid. We also got a chance to do personal training such as how to facilitate an effective meeting which was a 2 day course.

There is a graduate programme called the IT Leadership Programme. If you do well in the internship you get given the opportunity (depending on your review) to attend an assessment centre. Luckily I worked in an office with four people currently on the IT Leadership Programme so I managed to get a personal insight into it and how it works. I can say that it is definitely appealing and I have already applied for it.
The Culture
Among the interns, due to the fact that there were so many around UK, the social scene was ok but could be better.
I traveled from my parents house in London so I didnt have to rent a house. Socializing was ok as there was a high street with a lot of options.
I didn't go out in Hounslow
You have to reach out to different people in different businesses within GE to find opportunities. Some may come easier to find than others. It depends on the office you're in and your network.
