The Role
There were a number of great aspects to my internship, particularly the opportunities to network and visit other directorettes within the business. However, the role soon became relatively tedious and less demanding than I expected.
I was valued by some collegues more than others. Communication of the internship and its importance in supporting young talent was not unanimous throughout the company. Some managers within the company did not respect my responsibilities or my desire to progress.
The Senior Leadership team were always very encouraging and supportive, however; my direct line manager was less so and undervalued my skills.
The business of my daily role varied and depended on footfall. However, even the busy days were not intellectually demanding.
Despite encouragement from Senior Management, I was not provided the support required to progress in my role.
The experience available was limited and the development towards management level was minimal. The experience on offer was only a slight extension of previous part-time season work in similar stores. Regarding an internship, I was hoping for greater demand in my role and more opportunities to progress after the 12 months and post-graduate study.
The Company
The job was fun and the majority of the team were fun and easy to get along with.
As a new programme, there was a lot of development and adaptation throughout.
From a senior level, I believe there was a lot of investment, however; this was not unanamous down the chain within the company.
I would happily take a job within the company head office where the role would differ from my current job.
The Culture
As a location based intern, it was difficult to interact face-to-face with other interns.
The city was a great choice and very cost effective.
Nightlife was great and not too expensive.
I was situated in a vibrant location which provided lots to do.
