The Role
I really enjoyed my internship as I felt it has helped me learn a great deal about the real estate industry, especially about rent reviews, lease breaks, yields, rents and rateable values etc. It also confirmed my choice of career and I know I definitely want a successful career within property.
I was treated like an equal, from day one I felt like I'd been a member of the team for a few months, not just a few hours! I felt comfortable and liked the fact that other members of the team would ask me to assist them in valuations, measurements, research etc as I have learnt a great deal from this because it can be very different to what you are taught in univeristy lectures.
If I ever had a question my mentor was always available to help me meaning I was never afraid to ask, something that I feel is vital when it comes to an internship as you can learn as much as possible
Some days were busier than others but I always had something to do which meant I had good exposure to different aspects of becoming a surveyor and also that I learnt quickly how to do a variety of tasks whether that was writing particulars for a property or attending an enquiries meeting.
From an early stage I was given responsibility but as the time went on I was given greater responsibility which meant I was meeting clients on my own for viewings, measuring buildings on my own and making enquiries with regard to rateable values etc.
This internship brought together all of my modules that I have studied in uni into real life situations which helped me understand certain modules on a much better level.
The Company
The atmosphere was very relaxed and not too corporate, something that I liked very much. However, it was always busy which allowed me to absorb a lot that was going on by just listening whilst I was working.
I didn't have a set structure but I liked this, I knew what I was getting on with most days, I would always start the day reading and replying to emails and then go on to complete any tasks that I hadn't completed from the day before and then go on to see what any one in the office wanted me to for them. There was never a day where I was the office for the whole day, visits varied from site visits with clients, enquiry meetings, client meetings etc which provided a great variety day to day.
I would love to get on to the Savills graduate scheme as I feel they would provide great support and training for the APC.
The Culture
I was placed in a regional office therefore there weren't any other interns in my office but because I was close to home this didn't bother me.
