The Role
The work that was involved with my placement was not that applicable to the area of study in which I am involved. However, the overall experience made up for this fact and I think that doing something that was outside of my normal remit actually opened up my eyes more to another side of engineering.
The people that I worked with were really friendly and made the effort to speak with me.
I was assigned someone to work with, in addition to my line manager. This meant that I had two points of contact to raise queries. In particular, the person that I was working with frequently checked how I was getting on, but not so much that it was suffocating.
I found that there were occasions, particularly early on where I didn't have enough official work to fill my time, but that it got busier towards the end of my placement. There was access to the intranet thought, which made it possible to find out more about the organisation during the lulls in workload.
The majority of the work that I conducted had very little technical relevance to my degree course. However, I did get the chance to write some reports and look at some data, both of which are skills for the future. In addition, I got an insight into the manufacturing side of the organisation. Exposure to conversations going on in the office around me will undoubtedly prove beneficial to the future.
The Company
On my first day the person I was working with set out what it was that I would be doing and I was given a whole load of literature to read, and the work started from there. Sometimes there wasn't enough to do and some of my work was bitty - in terms of it would be a little bit here and a little bit there. But these little bits all gave me different insights.
I attended several training courses, which were interesting.

The Culture
There were only 4 of us placed at the site and 3 of us lived in the local town. It was a bit quiet and I went back home most weekends, but we did go to the pub several times. Having visited a friend at one of the larger sights, it is clear that I missed out to some extent on the potential social side of such a placement, but you can't have everything.
The house we lived in was £150 a week between three of us (excluding bills). Pubs are cheap. None of us had a car so we had to shop at the local co-op which was a bit on the dear side, but if you could get to some of the bigger supermarkets then that would be cheaper. My biggest expense was getting home on the train at weekends as there wasn't enough to keep me in Barnoldswick.
Only pubs in Barnoldswick, which are good for a few drinks. They do have discos on at the weekends, but we never went.
Not too much in Barnoldswick itself, but if you had a car and could therefore live nearby or at least get out of the town then there would be more.
