The Role
I was lucky to work on a wide variety of clients and teams so that I was able to see many aspects of audit. In my 8 weeks I think I worked on 8 different clients, so you certainly don't get bored!
My colleagues treated me like I was an actual employee. I was given responsibilities that new joiners would be given, and they always gave positive feedback where it was earned.
I had a performance manager who I had catch up meetings with every so often just to check on my progress and to answer any questions I had. He always kept me up to date on my progress and gave me a general idea of what feedback I had received from the teams I had been working on.
At times I had little or no work, and thus was allowed to leave early, but this was due to summer not being a very busy period or due to clients not providing the necessary documents. Generally at client sites though I found I had a good amount of work which lasted the time I was there. If not I always found that if you asked if anyone needed any help or if there was anything else you could do then someone would find something.
I was placed in charge of testing certain aspects and it was my work that went on the actual audit file, once being reviewed. Later on in my internship I was given greater responsibility for talking to clients.
I improved my communication skills greatly I believe, due to the contact I had with clients and various team members. I also enjoyed grater responsibilities which I had to multitask so I think I've probably improved my ability to juggle several things at once.
The Company
As my internship was in audit, when I was in the office (which was not a lot!), there weren't too many people about, due to the nature of audit. However my colleagues were always friendly and we always had lunch together.
The only thing I can complain about is being repeatedly asked for my passport, despite having shown it to them 3 or 4 times and copies being taken. Otherwise everything seemed to be very well organised.
The first two days of my internship were at a business focus course ran by KPMG for all people interning in departments in the South. This helped give us an understanding of the business and ease us into the sort of tasks that amy be required. We had a roleplaying activity in which we had to question 'clients' who were being extremely difficult and unwilling to cooperate. Although I never really experienced this at any client sites, I think it was a great idea to prepare you for such a situation.

Based on my feedback from my performance manager, I will potentially be offered a partner interview. As I've already been through all the other assessment procedures for the internship (online tests, telephone interview and assessment centre), this will be all that is required for them to offer me a graduate job. Based on conversations with my performance manager I am very optimistic, and apparently the percentage of summer interns who get offered a graduate job (provided they want one) is quite high.
The Culture
Unfortunately I wasn't able to go to any socials, but month's end drinks were organised and I was invited to the staff summer party- even though it was after my placement. I was also asked to participate in a hockey match with my colleagues, but unfortunately couldn't.
Had around about a 2 hour commute to the office (when I was there) and there wasn't really anything in the immediate area to do. You had to travel into Reading if you wanted to do something really, but I think the cost of socialising here was pretty average.
I didn't go out, but I've heard Reading is quite a good night out; there are quite a few bars as it's a student area.
I was invited to month end drinks, the staff summer party and a few sports events. Unfortunately I couldn't attend any of these, but my colleagues were looking forward to them.
