The Role
The work on your placement year with Eaton can be varied, and challenging, but I have found it really enjoyable all the way through. It is real, industrial work, with a purpose, and this is why it so useful. You will actually have a real impact on the business you are working within if you apply yourself properly to the work given to you.
The people around you in the business really do value you as soon as they can see that you are working to the best of your abilities, and offering results to the business. I have made some lasting friendships with some colleagues in the office and there are some really great people to work with.
I have received guidance and support from a number of people over the course of the year, from people such as my line manager, the senior mechanical design engineer, technical directors, and the HR team that run the placement scheme. The feedback is invaluable.
Sometimes things can get busy and hectic, but I imagine this is the same in many roles, in many different businesses.
The responsibility ive been given this year on my placement with Eaton has been beyond anything I could have ever imagined. From managing projects to being the lead mechanical engineer on projects, this has been an incredible opportunity and has probably been my highlight of the year.
The skills that I have picked up this year really are going to put me I a great place for both my final year at uni and then into industry. Both technical and personal skills have been improved through the great training days that are put on and through on-the-job learning.
The Company
Some areas of the office have a better atmosphere than others, but on the whole its been a great place to work .
The overall structure of the placement scheme has been incredibly well organised and well thought out. At times the project work that I have been doing has been challenging in terms of it all coming through at once, but there is nothing anyone would really be able to do to solve this as it is the nature of the business to a degree.
There was a huge amount of training days that would have cost the business a considerable amount so this was appreciated. The personal development that the company invest in you with this scheme is brilliant.

The technical leadership program the company offer is very appealing and I hope to get a place on it and go forwards with Eaton over the next few years.
The Culture
There was a good group atmosphere among the interns in our year group. I also made good friends with a couple of the graduates at the business.
The area of Sheffield that I lived in had very cheap rent. Other than that though it was pretty much on an average I would say.
Sheffield is a very good night out.
There was the odd company night out
