The Role
When I had work to do it was an enjoyable placement but as expected for a new intern I was given very little work to during the first few weeks of work. I suspect this is not specific to Rolls-Royce and is part of learning the ropes wherever you are working.
The working environment was friendly and welcoming. Everyone was generally happy to help when asked.
Everyone was very busy most of the time, so to get peoples support sometimes required some pestering. However once you had the attention of someone they were usually very helpful and supportive.
I was bored for the first few weeks but as I learnt more I found myself being given more responsibilty and became busier. By the end of the placement I was very busy, which I found made the job alot more enjoyable.
Many of my projects left me incharge of what I was doing, giving a high level of responsibility. My inputs into projects were taken seriously by my supervisors, which was very satisfying.
My placement was not very relevant to the technical content of my degree but the skills I developed will very much help me whatever I go on to do in my career. My time management and communication skills have developed and working in an industrial environment was great experience, which I recommend to any undergraduate.
The Company
My office was quiet but everyone was friendly and helpful.
The internship was generally well run.
There were courses and open days for opportunities after graduation, which were very helpful. Rolls-Royce is very encouraging of personal development and this showed through the intern program.

Rolls-Royce give lots of information on future prospects and the graduate schemes are very appealing. You have a 1 to 1 review at the end of the placement with a careers advisor who answers any questions.
The Culture
There were only 4 interns in Barnoldswick so the social scene was not brilliant but they were all very friendly and we did go out on many occasions.
I shared a house with 2 other interns. The rent was cheap (£50 a week each) but finding a house was nearly impossible. With the short placement length there was very little available rented accomodation and Rolls-Royce gave little help in finding somewhere suitable. We luckily stubbled across the landlord when we did. There was a local supermarket, which was reasonably priced.
There was nothing to do in Barnoldswick other than a few empty pubs. I had no access to a car so could not travel to anywhere nearby either.
I did not hear of any activities. I did, however, go out twice for drinks with colleagues.
