The Role
I really enjoyed my placement year. There are so many opportunities to take advantage of and you get to meet and network with so many people.
In a large, constantly changing team, I felt valued by my colleagues for the work I completed and thought of, but I felt that I had to notify members of my team as they are based elsewhere.
When you join the foundation team you are given a PDM and there are there for support and help that your manager may not be able to help with/is a different topic to your job. They are always accessible and you know they are always there if you need any support or guidance, should it be with graduate application forms or about expenses.
Depending on projects available, or the job you do, I was very busy for the majority of the time. However in periods where there is a limited amount of work, there are other activities that you can get involved with such as Giveback which, depending on what you get involved in, will take up some of your time.
Again, depending on the size of the projects, I was given as much responsibility as my team needed. However I felt like my actions made a difference, so I earned the trust to take on as much responsibility as possible.
Working for an IT company will develop your IT skills, especially Microsoft Excel and other internal softwares. Depending on the role given, it will assist your degree very well. Whilst studying a marketing degree at university, I have learned marketing strategies used by a corporate company.
The Company
If the office is busy there is a really great atmosphere.
I feel like the placement at IBM is really well set up; there is a lot of time, effort, and people who help with the scheme.
I put myself forward to attend different meetings, giveback activities and also social activities.

The company is so large that there are endless opportunities to develop yourself and your career. If you choose to change career paths in a number of years, it is possible to move to a different part of the company.
The Culture
Being based in Portsmouth was really social as we all lived near each other. We are close to London so commuting is extremely easy. All the placement students are in the same boat, and mostly all have the attitudes still of uni students!
Portsmouth is very cheap for rent and socialising compared to London.
There is a limited amount of places to go, but it's who you go out with not where you go!
Giveback activities are an amazing to get involved with. They include visiting your old school to give a talk about a career in the technology industry, workshops about IBM's Smarter Planet, and interview days at local schools. Also in Portsmouth the university is near by.
