The Role
Really interesting placement and product, great people.
Kind and helpful on the whole. Some were very generous in the time they devoted to explaining the processes/technologies and the company. As well as lots of career guidance.
Lots of 1 to 1 reviews initially, fewer as we became busier. Always invited to offsite visits/meetings that I was not required at for my own benefit and development.
Very busy for the most part and that is great. Normally 8-9 hour days, some extended to 11-12.
As much as I feel was appropriate. Some menial intern type tasks as expected, but I led a number of strands for the project. There was not as much technical work as I was expecting.
Gained a good understanding of a number of manufacturing processes, though testing I don't feel the placement offered me the technical challenges I was hoping for. Certainly provided me with more focus and ambition.
The Company
Some tension at times generated by poor management structure. On the whole though great teams, lots of food and non work related chat. A couple of nights out as well.
Very structured. IT caused some minor issues.
Only formal training was Health and Safety, ethics and air worthiness. Budget restrictions made it difficult to apply for any "engineering" courses. The placement was an invaluable learning experience non the less.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Awaiting a decision, I would like to return but I will always consider other companies. There has also been some discussion about working with them on a masters topic which would be fantastic.
The Culture
Established Apprentices+grads social club. Occasional nights out with the team.
Rent in Derby is relatively cheap. I would suggest you do not rent in Normanton. If I was to go back I would look to move to Chellaston or Uttoxeter New Road. Nights out can be a bit expensive as some bars try to cater exclusively for the engineering companies.
Same as every town/city at a weekend. Some very nice places to get a meal though.
Loads of clubs and societies. I pursued my own hobbies away from the company though.
