The Role
Pretty enjoyable, work was interesting for the most part. Sometimes it would become repetitive or tedious but that's just the nature of the job.
Everybody was really welcoming and supportive. My opinion was often asked for regarding topics which I had been working on which made me feel like I was actually contributing to the department. Everyone was friendly (if slightly reserved) and were always ready to explain something or help me out.
My supervisor was very good in giving me the right amount of help and support to carry out my tasks - enough so that I knew what to do, but not so much that I wasn't allowed to think for myself. Received less support from my line manager, but that was partly expected due to my supervisor being my first point of contact.
Things got busier in the second half of the placement as I started to work on more tasks, but I never felt over (or under) worked. My typical working hours were from 8:00 - 4:30.
Felt like I was given the right amount of responsibility, not too much or too little.
Learnt loads about engineering in the workplace, the importance of communication etc. Extremely valuable.
The Company
Fairly quiet office. Everyone was nice and friendly but people tended to be very focused on work. Can't really fault this though.
Took weeks to get logon details for laptops, UNIX, ForumPass etc. I found that there were limited resources for new starters which made it harder to get up to speed as the learning curve is very steep. We were assigned an Early Careers Consultant who was meant to organise various networking events and "keep in close contact" but heard very little from her throughout the placement. The performance review system was a pain to use as interns are not listed as part of the department they are working in, meaning you have to go through a long process to sort out who your line manager is in the system.
A few training courses provided, but hard to get on some of the better ones as they are normally reserved for grads.

Company Parties/Events
Would love to come back on the grad scheme.
The Culture
Lots of events organised through the Apprentice and Graduate Association.
Derby is fairly cheap.
Nice selection of pubs and bars, clubs are pretty terrible though.
Lots of stuff going on if you look for it.
