About You
The insight was really enjoyable, as I got to see a range of departments throughout.
Everyone was really welcoming. Because of the hot desk policy I got to know people quite quickly and everyone was more than happy to answer any questions I had.
I shadowed people in every department, and had opportunities to practice using the specialist software used, which was really useful.
It will be useful for some of my relevant degree modules. However, I don't think it's that relevant to the career I'm now pursuing, but that's down to me not them.
The Company
Got a full timetable at the beginning of the 2 weeks, detailing where I'd be, who I'd be shadowing/ working with, the department/ topic covered and duration of the sessions.
Everyone was really kind and chatty. My department brought biscuits in everyday!
One-on-one attention for the entire duration of the placement, and I even got my own logins to use the online training resources. This was really helpful.
I had opportunities to meet people who had got their jobs following the scheme. This really added to the whole experience.
I got to know exactly what the culture at the BBC is like- everyone at my office was very relaxed, but apparently that is different in London! In Manchester though, it seemed like they were a great bunch who it was easy to get along with. Hardly felt like work at all!
Everything Else
The one downside to the placement was that it was unpaid. However, I feel that that was fair enough, as I wasn't really working- I was mainly shadowing other members of staff. I did rack up quite a lot of expenses in tram fairs, but luckily my university has a fund which was able to cover this cost.
As I completed mini-rotations in different departments, I met lots of people across all levels. I also chatted to people on the tram to and from media city!
There weren't any networking or social events, but I got to know lots of people and am still in touch on LinkedIn.
Heard a lot about the football teams! But I'm not sure what other events there are- other than social events, and award-type ceremonies occasionally.
This was really useful for anyone interested in a qualitative-analysis based role in the media.
