The Role
I really enjoyed working with the team I was assigned to. The work was interesting and it was great to see how some of the concepts I had studied about at University were relevant in the work place.
My colleagues made me feel very welcome right from the first day and included me in everything they did whether it be during work hours like attending meetings with clients or after work social events.
My People Manger and other senior managers were extremely helpful throughout my internship. They would check I had work to be getting on with as well as review the work I did and ways to improve it. I had constant feedback throughout and this allowed my skills to develop in addition to building strong relationships with managers.
I believe I had close to the perfect balance in terms of how busy I was. I was never overloaded with work or struggling to reach deadlines. At the same time only occassionally was I left with no work to be getting on with and this would only happen for a short time. This balanced continuous stream of work allowed me to enjoy my internship and as a result gain more from it.
I was given responsibility throughout my internship in terms of individual working. I would be allowed to get on with my work and then once I had completed it a more senior employee would review it and recommend changes or discuss the next step to take with regards to finishing the task.
The knowledge of taxation I gained from my internship will be beneficial to my studies but the life skills I gained will be more important for further on in the future. I gained office skills, how to interact with clients, teamworking skills and technical knowledge as well as improving communication and writing skills.
The Company
The atmosphere was one of a relaxed but committed workplace. Everyone would interact with each other and there was time for fun but the priority was always work. This pleasant atmosphere allowed me to gain even more from my internship.
The team I was assigned to knew 2 weeks in advance that I was coming and as such had been preparing work for me for when I arrived. Interns were assigned a "buddy" and a People Manager and these 2 people were fantastic in helping me settle in and answering any queries I had.
The company invested a lot of time and effort in all the interns especially with the 3 day induction programme but also throughout the placement with constant feedback allowing me to improve and develop my skills.

I have accepted an offer to be on PwC's graduate programme starting in September 2013.
The Culture
There were social events on a weekly basis after work whether it be for someones birthday or other celebrations as well as lunches out. The whole department would be invited and there was always a good attendance which allowed everyone to socialise with each other. Also interns socialised together and we would often meet up after work and go somewhere as a group. All this added to the internship experience.
I worked in the centre of Birmingham so the prices in local pubs and restaurants were not too high. The office canteen sold food at a very good price. I lived at home during my internship so I can't really comment on the cost of living but other interns stayed in university halls for the internship and found the cost of living fine.
Working in the centre of Birmingham the nightlife was pretty good whether it be restaurants, pubs or nightclubs.
There are lots of opportunities to get involved in such as sports clubs or social clubs but my internship was only for 6 weeks so it wasn't really appropriate to get involved in at that point. It is something I will look into more when starting full-time in September.
