The Role
The first 5 weeks were amazing, but I felt that less effort was put into organizing the placement in the last four weeks. Overall, I learnt a massive amount and feel that i've gained valuable skills and experience that will be useful to me in the future. I've also discovered a lot about the divison, which will help me decide whether I want to work in this area in the future.
I was given a lot of responsibility and was continuously encouraged to give my opinion and attend a lot of meetings.
It varied from manager to manager, as a result of doing two rotations. One was very supportive and interested in my delevopment, whereas the other was quite distant.
I generally had a lot to do. As long as I worked hard throughout the day, I was able to start and leave the office at reasonable times.
The tasks I was given were all meaningful and value adding.
I've learnt a lot about the financial services, financial products and about my division. This will definitely help me in my studies.
The Company
Quite quiet, but very friendly. The open-plan structure meant that I had a lot of access to senior managers, but also meant that it was sometimes difficult to concentrate (for example, when someone nearby was on the phone).
As mentioned before, the first 5 weeks were brilliantly organized and a lot of effort was put into planning activities for us (outside of the office). The final 4 weeks were less good. I did have structured feedback opportunities and a good training week at the start of the internship. On the negative side, however, there were often a lot of last minute changes to the schedule, which gave an impression of disorganization. E.g. speakers being cancelled, assessment dates/criteria being changed...
The initial training was great. A full week of both general and specific training. During the placement itself, there was an after work bank-wide speaker series and a lunch-time divisional speaker series.
Company Parties/Events
We're still waiting to hear, but if I was offered a job I would definitely accept it.
The Culture
Very sociable people.
It's London...
Lots of good bars/places to eat.
Plenty of football/sports teams open to the male interns, not so many opportunities for the female interns. However, there were also activities such as a book club and a number of drinks events to get involved in.
