About You
Burges Salmon's 2-week vacation scheme provided a fantastic platform that allowed me the opportunity to get a solid insight in to the culture of the firm and the type of work I could expect as a trainee. A good mix of individual and group assessments, including a number of excellently planned social events -- a great experience.
I was relied up to carry out a number of tasks, so felt my contribution was valued. Equally everyone in the firm was very approachable and available to assist if I had any queries.
I received the right level of guidance and support given that we were also being assessed on how we managed with the work and tasks we were set. We were also provided with the opportunity to be given feedback and provide insights on our own self-assessment.
Skills were being assessment more than developed, but the information gained from the experience certainly helped me to shape my own understanding of the areas of law that would be of interest to me in the future.
The Company
The insights gained in to the areas of law and in to the firm itself were well structured given the 2-werek time frame for the vacation scheme.
A very positive atmosphere throughout the 2-week scheme, including a sensible and open discussion during the final interview.
I am a mature student making a career change in to law; the 2-week scheme was more focused on assessing my existing skills and knowledge rather than investing in training and/or developing me.
The 2-week scheme was extremely valuable in getting a detailed in sight in to the culture of the firm and the type of work I could expect in a full-time role.
As above, the 2-week scheme provided a good balance between work and social events and provided a very good opportunity to learn about and experience the company culture.
Everything Else
As stated previously, there were plenty of opportunities to meet and network with other employees from the firm -- this however was, as it should be I think, very much on the basis of what you put in to it is what you get out. The opportunities were there if you made the effort to create them, they were not set-up for you.
Coupled with the networking opportunities within the office, the social events organised by the firm throughout the 2-weeks were very good; with early evening events followed by dinners; and by splitting the activity from the dinner this also gave people like myself who had to leave early to catch a train home an opportunity to participate without missing out on the whole event.
Yes and there were plenty.
Yes, to anyone considering a career in law, if you can be selected for a Burges Salmon vacation scheme it will be provide you with a very valuable experience.
