About You
The insight program introduced me to an entire new sector of engineering that I had not considered for my future career. It gave me the opportunity to talk to those in the field and hear their experiences.
Everyone was very welcoming and talked to us knowing we had previous knowledge on the subject which was interesting as it also gave us the opportunity to think for ourselves.
From the insight program I was given the tools needed to apply for a placement within the company and also provided me with knowledge to know what to expect if I am successful in a placement with Schlumberger.
The skills and knowledge I attained through the insight program are not necessarily applicable to my studies in my course, however I feel if I was to be successful in achieving a placement with Schlumberger, the knowledge I gained from the program would be greatly beneficial.
The Company
Given the insight program ran for only 2 days I was amazed at how much of the company we were able to experience. With a detailed plan for the two days we were able to see all different aspects within Schlumberger without lingering too long on any one element.
The employees we met were keen to educate us and answer any questions we had which gave positive encouragement to asking about any queries or any part we wanted more detail on.
Having only been at Schlumberger for 2 days, training was limited. However we were given in depth information into the training we would receive if joining the company.
Getting the chance to talk to employees from each of the different technology and research centres showed a general overview of each sector. Getting the opportunity too move around within the company was a great incentive and the option to gather additional training and development ensures that your knowledge is forever expanding.
Having only been in storehouse for 2 days I wasn't expecting to meet such a variety of people as I did. Getting the opportunity to work with people from all over the world and experience their cultures would greatly develop myself as a person. The company's culture of further training their employees is a great attraction as gaining new skills would greatly develop my personal career path.
Everything Else
Schlumberger kindly reimbursed my travel fees and paid for all expenses whilst with them in stonehouse. This gave me the opportunity to attend as I had to fly from Ireland and showed they were keen to give me this opportunity.
A careers convention was held giving us the opportunity to ask current employees on a one-to-one basis about their role within the company. We also gained the opportunity to talk to employees while working on a case study.
We were invited to a dinner with management where we were able to talk about both the professional and personal side of working for Schlumberger.
Some of the employees were able to talk about their personal life within their job. This showed the activities arranged by Schlumberger for employee bonding outside of the work place.
The experience greatly improved both my knowledge and choices on where I see my career leading. The 2 day insight program introduced me to an entirely different aspect of engineering I had not previously considered.
