About You
Really great mixture of social events, skills sessions, and getting stuck in to actual work.
The department I was in gave me real work to do and were genuinely appreciative of the tasks I was doing. It was generally work they would have had to do and I felt like I was part of the team. Equally all the other staff were welcoming of the Vac Scheme students and always had time to chat.
Two days of training helped us out with online systems, printing, etc. After that you were pretty much on your own but the various helplines were great, and we were given a printed booklet of IT tips and know-how. It wasn't completely comprehensive, however, and for some things you had to ask others in your department.
The scheme included training sessions on legal research, networking, Pro Bono. We also had breakfast briefings on specific departments and areas of law, and we were welcome to attend the department briefings.
The Company
Good amount of work/play, and given a timetable of events on the first day. Around 2-3 evening events per week for things such as bowling, karaoke, pub quiz, and dinners. Also group projects, meetings and briefings were organised to get us involved in the firm and bonding with each other.
Generally really good, even when stressful things like the group presentations happened. Some days there were no vac schemer events so you were just in the department, so it was more like being actually at work, which was also good.
Lots of training, some with external specialists, so really felt like the firm were investing in us.
The firm were very good at maintaining a good level of social events so that we all bonded and had fun, whilst giving us enough time in our one department to get involved in work and experience what it would be like in the office.
Nabarro are very proud of their culture and it really came through. Everyone, including the partners, were very welcoming and as interested in us as we were in them. Associates and trainees were honest about their careers and it really felt like the firm was very transparent in the type of people and culture they have.
Everything Else
Paid £275/week
I was assigned a trainee buddy, and an associate supervisor so that I had people to talk to about anything. Vac Schemers are encouraged to attend meetings, go to briefings, and meet others in the firm.
Everyone was really friendly and in my busy department I spoke to everyone equally. The events are well attended by all levels of employees, and a networking event helped us to meet other interns from across the city. The social events were extremely well planned and great fun, and even the bowling and karaoke night was attended by partners.
We had a breakfast briefing about pro bono and charity work, along with emails inviting us to take part in charity events that the firm are involved in.
Definitely, it is a good mix of information, skills development, and fun.
