The Role
Working for GSK has a number of benefits. IP students are made to feel like real employees and so you really get stuck in with work. I worked very closely with a number of colleagues and really enjoyed a number of projects/incidents that I dealt with.
Everyone at GSK, particularly the IPs, are valued for their hard work. Its not just the normal day job, but the other events that we participated in that made us feel valued and appreciated.
The support from my Manager was second to none and he was always there to support me. The only issue was that he was very busy meaning that we couldn't always speak. We did however catch up every week.
I found there to be a fantastic balance of work and play. I chose to put more time into work, working extra hours for my own benefit. This was due to me enjoying the role, and making the most of the opportunity. However, if ever I had too much work I could always say so and the workload could be reduced.
I worked in a fairly small team and was keen to make an impressive. I quickly became a key member of the team and dealt with a large number of incidents/tickets. Because of my efficiency and drive, I found I was doing a lot of work - but not too much!
I learnt a huge amount during my placement. As well as the technical skills that directly related to my role, I advanced my interpersonal skills communicating with other employees both face to face and during live meetings, and did a large number of other activities which involved presenting and project managing.
The Company
There was a good mix of individuals in the office. Some liked to work all the time, others liked a bit of balance. Overall, this meant that a good balance could be achieved by the IP students.
The IP scheme is very well grounded and runs very smoothly. The IP in charge of the process this year was fantastic and very good at his job. With GSK taking over 300 IP students, and over 50 in IT, GSK are very comfortable with the IP process.
There were a number of cutbacks during my placement year, however there was still budget for some training that I completed and my manager was always willing to allow me to go on training courses that didn't carry huge costs.

I would love to work with GSK in the future, however as their not a technical company, technical positions are being reduced and my area of interest is likely to be outsourced over the next few years. If there was a role available however, I would love to take it.
The Culture
Lots of good events took place all the time. The IPs were great at organising nights out and events across London.
London isn't the cheapest place in the world and the salary from GSK isn't the best. We were able to go out and have a good time, but there were restrictions and it wasn't viable to go out all of the time.
Its London - there all sorts. Shame its all so expensive, but you get that regardless of where you work in London.
Lots of opportunities with the other IPs and we had good fun the full time employees.
