The Role
I enjoyed my placement a great deal. There has been highs and lows as in any role however i made the most of the opportunity. I highly recommend a placement year to help progress your professional development and improve your employability.
I always felt like i was a valued member of staff and that i was a key contributor to a successful day in branch. However i feel the work i did and the hours i put in sometimes went un noticed, some more appreciation in the form of verbal praise and feedback would have been really motivating.
Whenever i had a question, needed help or required coaching my branch manager and assistant manager would assist me to the best of their ability. Whenever i got the chance i would note down the tips they gave to help me with any future tasks and so i had a reference to look back on if i ever forgot/got confused on an activity.
The branch i was placed at was extremely busy all the time! This was good as the days flew by however it was vital i remained organised at all times to get all my work done. There is a constant balance between the customer facing part of the role and the administrative side of daily rental.
My branch manager thought i was competent and efficient in getting jobs done and as a result of this i was rewarded with alot of responsibility. I really enjoyed this as i felt i was a more experienced and confident intern by the end of the placement year.
I have learnt skills that will be applicable to several aspects of my future from my academic life to work life and my social life. The opportunity to strengthen my communication, organisation and people skills has been extremely valuable. I feel much more confident going in to my final year with group work projects, presentations and my dissertation etc than i did a year ago. In addition to this, the customer facing aspect of my job requirement has strengthened my people management and customer service skills, both of which i feel are applicable to my future career regardless of the type of company or role that i embark upon.
The Company
Some days the office was a difficult environment if one member of the team got stressed out it would rub off on other members and bring the mood down - i think this is inevitable in such a fast-paced working environment. Saying that, i laughed alot for a majority of the placement year and i had alot of fun with my colleagues all of which were of a similar age or had shared the same experiences as i had e.g university, placement years, work experiences.
The placement year was very organised with stages and targerts that were to bet met and time maanged by each individual. It is entirely up to the individual how quickly they wish to progress and be promoted. Likewise if an employee felt that they needed more time at a certain level or in a certain area they were able to take their time and build up their experience as there is always a promotion opportunity around the corner.
The inducation training and 'stage' training i was received was excellent. The content of the training days were always relevant, in depth and informative. I do think 'on the job' training could have been more organised and frequent.
Company Parties/Events
The future employment prospects at enterpise rent-a-car are endless. There are ample opportunities to go into management positions within daily rental or to move into a different area of the company such as corporate business or human resources. Prospective employees should definitely consider the scale of enterprise rent-a-car and the fact that the company boasts continous growth economically! This only creates more and more job roles which is unique in the current employment climate! Definitely a company to work for if you want to work hard and make it to the top!
The Culture
I was fortunate enough to be placed with another intern who shared the same interests as myself. As a result we would motivate and help each other in work whenever it was required and then meet up socially outside of work to go to the gym or dinner etc.
Everything can be done on a budget local to where i was situated!
The local town centre isn't the best for nightlife in my opinion however my branch was only 20 minutes maximum from Manchester City Centre and the Trafford Centre which had loads of amenities on offer.
Yes. As an intern i was participated in 'female focus' group meeting - an opportunity to meet with other female employees and discuss challenges we face in the work place, share stories and best practice and raise money for charity. Out of work area nights out, branch meals and the annual holiday party are a great opportunity to wind down and socialise outside of work.
