The Role
It is a very fast-paced environment which can be stressful at times but the people are very understanding and helpful.
I felt like I was part of the family, my team were really nice to me and made an effort to socialise with me outside of work hours.
For the most part I was given a lot of support and guidance when I needed it. However, as it is a fast-paced I sometimes felt that by asking for help I was a hindrance to my management team.
There was a lot of work to get through on a daily basis as I was assisting a whole department with their administration and other tasks. At the beginning of my placement there were times I had very little to do and other days I felt like I was overloaded. If you are reading this, don't let it put you off - Hays have now created a structured intern/placement programme which looks really great.
I was given a fair amount of responsibility, covering for recruitment consultants when they were off. I was in charge of organising events and completing weekly/daily trackers of work rate and other key aspects of the job.
Although, recruitment may not be what I want to do in the future, I still considered my time there as very valuable. I learnt a lot of things such as commercial behaviours, structuring of emails, telephone manner. I became more confident and I definitely learnt that I am a people person and perhaps not that much of a sales person.
The Company
I can't really speak for other departments but my department was great although we had a good laugh every day we knew when we needed to get our heads down and get on with our work.
Although I enjoyed my placement, at the beginning I felt like they didn't really know what to do with me and I had no real structure to my day or a job description as such. However, I know that from 2014 Hays have created a intern/placement programme which has a defined structure so I'm sure any new interns/placement students won't feel the same as I did.
I was sent on the same training as the trainee recruitment consultants. Which meant going to London for 4 days and attending training in the massive Hays office based in Cheapside. It was a great experience and I learnt a lot in that short space of time.

The Culture
In the Hays office in Glasgow there was only me and one other placement student. We worked in different departments but we spoke and got a long. We would go out with our departments nearly every Friday. Hays has a great social scene very rarely was there a Friday without drinks after work.
It was the city centre of Glasgow so there was unlimited options of bars and pubs and there's usually deals on.
Glasgow is great for a night out.
As I said before we would go out for drinks at the end of a long week but apart from that there was nothing.
