About You
The vacation placement was really useful in terms of career insight as you experienced the real work of a trainee for two weeks.
You were given real trainee work so you felt like you were actually helping and a part of the team.
Everyone had a trainee 'buddy' assigned to them - this was a really good system as it made sure you had someone looking after you and you could always ask all of your questions.
In particular I improved my research skills and I found it really interesting to see another side of law by understanding the practical and commercial application of legal principles.
The Company
There were practice talks every morning which were really useful and normally there was also a firm event like a lunch or social every day.
It was really nice to see everyone getting involved in all of the different events (including partners) which meant that you got to know lots of different people within the firm.
We had an induction day to ensure that we'd be able to use all the systems of the firm correctly and it was also useful to learn about all the resources available.
You get a really good insight as you get your own desk within the open plan office and you are given work just the same as trainees. Therefore, you don't just observe and you get to properly experience what the work is like.
We had a CR presentation and talks on different initiatives within the firm so that we could understand the committment to diversity and equality.
Everything Else
We were paid £250 per week for two weeks.
We had multiple lunches with trainees and also a partner lunch.
The trainees organised really good social events which were attended by vacation scheme students and the trainees so there was a really nice mix.
We had lots of emails about sport activities within the firm and we had a talk on the volunteering opportunities too.
I would definitely recommend the vacation scheme - one thing that is really useful is staying within the same practice group for the whole two weeks, meaning that you get to complete more long-term work and become truly comfortable in that environment.
