The Role
Really enjoyed the 6 weeks, they go by very quickly once you're in the job.
Colleagues all very welcome, some of them proactively come to you to say hi, my buddies checked in on me every morning to make sure I was doing OK.
Didn't really see my line manager much but he is always there should I need assistance.
Work comes in peaks and troughs, just ask your buddies or email the junior consultants for work if you're low on workload.
I was taken through one transfer value calculation, then asked to do subsequent ones by myself, including the rough checks. This was a tough challenge!
Lots of actuarial-related training, e.g. getting used to the terminology of pensions. Learnt how to prioritise work and complete tasks to a high quality on a tight schedule.
The Company
Lots of out-of-office events, including softball, pub quiz, Ultimate Frisbee, and In-House Olympics. Can join other sports teams as well.
Definitely structured but very flexible within the structure. The programme made me feel like I was a fresh graduate. It gave me a real sense of what the future day-to-day life would be like once I start working full-time.
3 training sessions in the first week, 1.5 hours each. Also had self-study videos on Anti-Money Laundering and Professional Excellence.
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Apparently outlook for pensions isn't top-notch, but once you qualify as an actuary you can literally do anything.
The Culture
Social yet inclusive atmosphere. Everyone I know felt respected. No one forced or pressured into doing something they don't want to do.
London is expensive. Most of my lunches were over five quid. We often ate outside instead of at the company canteen.
London. Expensive, but the best in the UK.
See above. Many sports teams and social events. There is something for everyone.
