The Role
I really enjoyed my time at JLR, there are a lot of exciting things going on, and the people were very nice.
I felt surprisingly valued from the very beginning. I was treated as a member of the team rather than a student.
My manager and members of my team were very helpful and supportive.
I had an unfortunate incident at the beginning of my placement where I couldn't install the software I needed due to not having admin access. This took a couple of weeks to sort out but I was given work to do in the mean time, and once sorted I had a lot more to do.
I was given sole responsibility of writing some software utilities for use in the testing environment. This was really great as I could show what I could do and really make a difference to the workplace.
I polished my programming skills as well as gaining valuable experience in the world of work.
The Company
I was not in the most exciting part of the office, but everyone in my team was friendly.
I can't fault this much as everything was sorted out pretty easily. The only a couple of things took a little while longer than they perhaps could have done.
All employees are able to access £200 on the Employee Learning Scheme (ELS) once per year. This applies to placement students too. You can use this money to do any sort of course or qualification, work related or not.
Confirmed as coming back next summer, with a view to staying on for 15 months (sandwich year) and every summer thereafter for the duration of my degree.
The Culture
I lived in Coventry Uni accommodation along with approx. 80 other JLR interns. They're all great people, and we had a pretty good range of social activities going on.
SO CHEAP. I am comparing this to Hampshire and Surrey, so this may not be the same for you but everything was incredibly cheap. Accommodation was £20 a week cheaper than my Uni Halls, and a lot nicer too boot. Drinks are about half the price of Uni as well.
It's pretty ok. I think it's more about the people anyway, but there are some decent clubs/bars in Coventry. I've heard good things about Leamington, and Birmingham is but a train ride away.
There weren't many things offered by the company itself other than the ELS mentioned earlier, but there were loads of things to do in the local area/with other interns. A lot of the interns played squash.
