The Role
I enjoyed my time in the role.
Felt like an active member of the team. Able to ask any questions without feeling like I was wasting anyone's time.
An induction and plan were created in the first week. After that had occasional brief catch ups, could request time in their diaries if a longer meeting was needed. Other members of the team happy to sit and give more day to day support with tasks.
From the second week onwards had a reasonably good balance where I had just enough to be getting on with that I was not bored but I was definitely not busy or inundated with tasks.
Was given a modelling task that would otherwise been done by a permanent member of the team. For them it would have been a background task but it was given to me as my main 'project'.
Used a lot of Excel which is always useful. Learned the basics of a dynamic analysis simulation software. Touched on some google sites script writing and project management processes.
The Company
It was a relaxed but often quite quiet office atmosphere. People did have casual chats amongst themselves and there was the odd burst of laughter.
My manager contacted me a month before I joined to ask if there was any priorities or criteria my placement had to meet - this was not the case for myself but I was very encouraged that he was planning what I might be doing so far in advance. In the first couple of weeks we sat down together and decided on what teams/tasks I would be a part of during the placement and what my main project would be.
There were online learning courses available (widely ranging in topic) which you could do as much or as little as desired. In person courses from 1 day to 1 week were available but only if absolutely required. Employee learning scheme exists where the company contributes a sum of money towards an external course or activity or your choice.
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Will take part in a shortened assessment process in order to hopefully be offered a job starting next year.
The Culture
Many of the undergraduates live together and go out at the weekends.
Rent was reasonable, supermarkets in walking distance and some cheap pubs if you looked for them.
Not many options but definitely some fun to be had.
Some social sports organised weekly.
