The Role
I got placed into a department that really suited me, and despite the slow start (them not sure what to do with me) settled into a project that was interesting and challenging.
Most people made an effort to integrate me with the team and I was trusted to make decisions and my opinions were taken into consideration.
My line manager was great and really saw my placement as an opportunity for me to learn more about the company and department rather than to give me loads of menial tasks to do.
Some days were really busy with lots to do, while others could be slow. Generally projects/tasks were short term so once finished had to wait for the project leader to be available to sign off work and assign new work.
Working closely with another undergraduate we were put in charge of the user interface and some debugging issues with some modelling which vastly improved my computing skills and also garnered immediate results that we could see the benefit of.
Gained invaluable experience in computing, modelling and large companies in general. Also learnt lots more about how an automotive company operates and the huge variety of jobs available.
The Company
Really relaxed open and friendly, lots of people made the effort to introduce themselves and stop and say hi.
Really well organised so major issues starting or during, and I always knew who to contact in case of an issue. Starting was a bit slow in terms of what I would be working on but that was expected.
Given the opportunity to attend modules run by the department to get to know different sectors of the department that I was in. As well as being involved in the Women in Engineering mentoring scheme throughout my time here.
They offer placement students the chance to attend an end of summer graduate assessment centre or non-graduating students the opportunity to come back the next year providing your line manager approves you.
The Culture
People that stayed in the student accommodation in coventry had lots going on
Pretty good not too expensive (I personally stayed with family) but the rent in general wasn't that expensive.
Really fun evenings with the other undergrads in the common rooms, bars pubs and clubs.
Yes, lots of stuff was organised
