The Role
With this particular scheme you are allowed to change department when you like and go to a different department of your choice. This means that you choose your own work so you can choose what work that you enjoy.
In all the departments I was located in I was treated like a valued member of the team, most departments have socials from time to time and all members of the team are invited.
Talking with other placement students and graduates one thing we all agree on is the amount of support and time people are willing to put in to help you.
This varied with departments, some were very busy and some were not. However if the department was not busy enough you can move to a department that is.
This varied with department massively, if you proved you were capable then most departments were willing to give you responsibilities however you normally had to ask for these extra responsibilities.
I moved to departments that were involved in the type of work I want to carry on as a career so I learnt some invaluable skills. However again it depends on which department you pick.
The Company
Some departments were very lively while others were a bit quiet, with that said even the quiet departments had a good atmosphere.
The internship was run pretty much like the graduate scheme which has been set up and running for a long time. The only difference is you don't get to go on the same training courses they do.
Unfortunately on this scheme other than the day to day running there was not a big opportunity for training courses. However there a plenty of development opportunities within the departments.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
National Travel
I was offered a job with this company along with the other IPs on this scheme once I had completed my end of scheme review. As long as you show you are capable you are likely to be offered a job. On top of this I had my contract extended by three months at my request.
The Culture
There is a large graduate/placement/trainee community however this does differ from site to site.
Again this differs between sites. I worked at both the Barrow and Weymouth site, Weymouth was more expensive and Barrow was very cheap.
The nightlife wasn't great in Barrow but there were regular trips organised to Liverpool and Lancaster.
There is a big graduate community and there are lots of different sports and activities arranged regularly
