The Role
The company were very well organised in delivering the internship, and dedicated a lot of resources to helping interns. The culture and atmosphere at the company are excellent, and the work is very interesting.
Lots of social events to incorporate interns into the company. Also there were quite a lot of interns (six short term 'training interns' and six longer term interns, so it was easy to make friends with others.
Supervisor always available to help with programming issues, and very patient. Also there were weekly meetings with our supervisor to discuss our progress and what we would like to do with the rest of our internship. Initially there were lots of classroom style sessions to help us learn to code, and then a very well thought out project for us to do.
Always something to do, though work did vary somewhat. The hours are very flexible, so it's encouraged to work fewer hours if you have less to do.
As interns we were guided through the creation of a web application to be used internally at Softwire. Hence no responsibility for external projects. However it would not be a good idea to let interns loose on important code at a company so focussed on quality, and would place them under a lot of pressure.
The internship took me from having a very limited knowledge of programming to a solid understanding of C#, and a broad overview of the ASP.NET MVC framework for web applications.
The Company
Very casual open plan office, with a 'chillout' area for fun and games whenever you need a break. At times it might have been nicer to have a little more quiet to aid with focus though.
Very well structured internship. Training at the beginning using small coding challenges, then working on a larger web app, then programming bots to play the game of battleships using that app.
Company invested a huge amount of resources in us, taking two employees completely out of their full time work to help us (12 interns). They also provided us all with our own complete workstations.

The company employs interns with the intention of employing them in the future, as a method of expanding and acquiring high quality developers.
The Culture
Very good. Lots of trips to the pub, lunches together etc, and lots of fun and games in the office.
Being in central London, all of this is of course expensive. I stayed in university halls which provided a very reasonable quality of accommodation, but it could have been cheaper.
Apparently fine, but I'm not personally much of a Nightlife fan.
Company has all sorts of clubs which employees are actively encouraged to join in with. They also took us for free drinks at the pub and free curry.
