About You
I had a lot of fun, the time went so quickly! The tasks were interesting - always well explained and relevant. The socials were a lot of fun, and most importantly everybody was easy to get on with.
Having three weeks in one seat really helped in this regard, everybody in my department knew who I was and made me feel very welcome.
My supervisor and buddy were naturally both very approachable and accommodating, but everybody was always available if I ever found myself in
I wish I had known all the things we learnt about Westlaw, LexisNexis and PLC when I was doing my degree! The training was excellent and very practical.
The Company
Everything ran to time, we were given a clear schedule and knew what we would be doing in good time. It was obvious that there had been a lot more thought put into this scheme than the others I had been on.
Really good generally, people are very laid back at the firm. The way we were split into teams for our assessment and the general nature of the scheme (everybody who gets a Training Contract is on that particular scheme) meant it was a little more competitive than others, but everybody was friendly nonetheless.
We were given extensive IT and phone training, knowledge training and a mid-seat appraisal and feedback at the end. It is clear that the firm values training very highly.
As you're in the one seat over the three weeks, the range of work is similar. Also you can follow work throughout your time in a way that is difficult on a traditional one-week-per-seat Vacation Scheme. Having said that, the hours were quite different - my supervisor would ask me why I was staying past five every day!
You don't know what a company is really like until you're inside. Having said that, it's pretty much how its advertised - very friendly and open.
Everything Else
£225 per week in Sheffield - very good in this regard!
Partner dinner, general introductions and socials. So yes!
A lot of fun, although I am not as good a bowler as I thought I would be. The trainees get very competitive indeed though!
We were invited to a Master Cutler's Challenge event, and the firm even paid for our tickets. We were cc'd on all emails regarding activities outside of work, and generally made to feel welcome.
It is the clearest insight into a career in Law of all the Vacation Schemes I have been on, and the people are genuinely friendly people. Highly recommended!
