    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed this internship, due to the interesting work that people were on and the great client lists. One of the main things that stood out for me working at Towers Watson was the quality of the people who worked there. Some of the most intelligent and nicest people I've ever met.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt quite valued by colleagues due to the amount of time they were willing to give up in order to explain the work I was doing.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was really helpful and nice, always willing to find me work. All the other colleagues were also really great, always giving up their time to help you out with work and explain tasks as well.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This varied from day to day and week to week. Sometimes there would be limited client work, but there was always plenty of project time fillers. Towards the end of the 6 weeks I was busy with project deadlines and I started to get more client work as I gained experience.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • This varied from day to day. A lot of the work I did was checking over work that actuaries had done. Although as the weeks went on I was given more interesting and valuable work.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learnt valuable Microsoft Excel training that I hadn't done before. This would definitely be useful for any future employment and at university

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Really great friendly atmosphere. Everyone who worked there all seemed to be really good friends with each other outside the work place as well. It was a really social work place. Made it a lot easier to ask questions.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well organised with first week scheduled training sessions. Each day I knew how and where to get work from; and I was reminded of meetings I was meant to go to by colleagues as well.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The first week of the internship was a training week, so each day we'd receive training sessions in different areas of actuary, to prepare us for the sort of work we'd receive on the internship. These training sessions were held by both graduates and more senior professionals so there was a good mixture. We also had 3 training sessions in London involving all the interns in the UK; which was good to meet and get to know all the interns from different offices and lines of businesses.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I was informed of how the scope for moving up levels as an actuary was really about how much effort and work you put into the role.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The graduates were really heavily involved in the social scene with the interns. More than twice a week they organised trips to the pub after work, which really helped everyone get to know each other. There was an intern BBQ the first week; cricket and rounders events with all the colleges other weeks; including BBQs. We were also taken to the Oval for a cricket match. We were lucky that when we came; many of the junior colleagues were receiving exam results so they were happy to get involved in the after work social scene. Everyone wanted us to feel very welcome.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Standard London prices so a bit more expensive than what I'm used to when I'm at university.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • We went out most Fridays either to the pub or local club which was fun. Most days after work there would be some sort of social event to get involved in as well
