The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my work at PwC, the organisation of all events was very well set out and allowed us to fully enjoy every intern event we attended.
Working in a regional office, the atmosphere is potentially more friendly than working in London. I felt a part of the team from the onset, even whilst working in the same pod as Managers and Senior Managers. Various coffee breaks, quizzes etc. occur throughout the week in addition to the general conversation that goes on throughout the office. It is easy to be able to walk up to a Director/Partner and begin a conversation about outside of work.
My main 'go-to' was by buddy who is assigned to you at the beginning of the internship. Throughout the 6 weeks I sat in the pod next to him, and he was always helpful in assisting me in any work I needed to do that I didn't understand. Furthermore, he always tried to provide me with as much interesting work as possible. Additionally, my people manager sat close as well and was always on hand to ask any questions of. When getting work for other people including senior associates, managers, senior managers and directors, I was always able to ask them questions surrounding the piece of work I was doing and at no point did I feel like I was getting in the way of their own work.
My internship took place in the summer, which is usually a less busy period of time for my department therefore there were some days were there was no work I could do, and other days where I had a lot on.
I was happy with the responsibility given to me, and in some cases surprised I was asked to do a bit of important research etc.
I've gained a great deal during this internship, including the confidence to be able to strike up a conversation and improved organisation skills which I believe will assist greatly for my final year of study.
The Company
Although there was always a focus on work and hitting your targets, conversation was always flowing throughout the office. Being able to get to know everyone in my regional office, and making jokes with them etc. was a definite advantage to working at my desk.
Excellent organisation from Day 1 at the Induction to the final day with the Dragon's Den event and exit interviews.
It is obvious a lot of money has been invested into us and the internship scheme itself, with a development day halfway through the internship that focused on improving presentation skills etc.
I'm waiting to hear back from PwC with regards to a graduate offer, however regardless the fact that I can put PwC down on my CV will, I believe, greatly improve any future prospects with other organisations. However, I feel like I am suited to a role in PwC, and once in the firm there are many chances to move to a different office/country within the firm itself, due to its large global presence.
The Culture
Unfortunately due to the location of my office, a good social scene was limited. I did go to lunch at a few nice pubs along with canal throughout the 6 weeks, and went out one night to some bars in Loughborough with all the first year associates. However, having spoken to various London interns who attended many different evening events on their induction, I feel like this is the only area where this office has a disadvantage.
I lived at home in Leicester therefore did not have to pay accomodation costs - my only cost was petrol for my 25 commute drive to the office which is more than acceptable. Going to lunch was not very expensive either.
Nearby places to go out include Loughborough and Nottingham. Going out to bars in Loughborough was not too bad, however nothing compared to places such as Birmingham, London etc.
There were no activities outside of work
