The Role
Wishing I could extend for another 2 weeks!
Everyone is very friendly. Because they love what they do and, to an extent, have similar types of personalities in some respects, they're always willing to talk about the projects they're working on, explain the nature of the work they're doing for the client etc.
We were based in different offices and she was very very busy so left me to get on with whatever other associates/consultants had passed on to me. I could easily get in touch if I had questions, which I would do, but there are plenty of helpful people in my office that I could ask too.
Due to the nature of consulting (and of course being new, an intern, only here for 6 weeks), there would be days that were quite quiet, whilst other days could be extremely busy, making it a struggle to leave the office before 6pm! I love being busy so I was happy picking up any work that needed to be done - it just depended how much opportunity there was. Summer is typically quite a quiet period.
I was given ownership of some projects - some of the bigger things I had the opportunity to work on. Others were small, ad hoc tasks which I would complete in an hour or two and hand back as these were final stages of the project right before work would be delivered to the client.
Always good exposure to spend time in an office, get some client exposure (very lucky!) and build interpersonal skills, learning the boundaries between keeping things professional and when I could be more open about myself in a more informal setting. Little technical skills on Microsoft etc. will of course be invaluable wherever you go.
The Company
As our office is based in London and the bosses sit here (compared to other offices across the UK), many colleagues from other offices found my office to be quite quiet and professional. I find it a good balance between professionalism and informality as it is - and often find the other offices to be too loud/informal (not sure how they get any work done!)
I did an informal internship last summer which was very much ad hoc work as when it popped up - with some ongoing projects whilst I was there. Going into a structured intern programme this summer, I thought it would be a lot more formal and, well, structured. But I didn't find it too different from my previous internship. I know interns in other departments have been given objectives to fulfil and set other objectives with their managers which they'd like to fulfil by the end of the internship - but maybe our department has a less structured programme so work was given quite informally. There has been one ongoing project which takes place every year so was quite well organised in terms of briefings, presentations etc.
They have granted me with a couple of training sessions, although not very many as I am not here for long. I think it's more for grad roles and permanent jobs.
The nature of the job sounds fantastic and the company is such a great place to work - only thing is that pay is quite low, definitely not high enough to sustain a comfortable life in London.
The Culture
As there are so many offices, only a few interns were working in each office. The other intern on my team was from Hong Kong, like myself, and after meeting on our first day, discovered we had quite a number of mutual friends. We get along really well and enjoy working together. Midway through our internship, we had a day with all the interns to present back on the group projects we've been working on. It was nice to see everyone, as we hadn't met since the initial induction day. We got along much better and after work, all headed to the pub together for drinks.
Downtown London - enough said!
Plenty of bars and restaurants around the area as we are in a business district.
A couple but maybe because of the summer period/a lot of people being away on holiday, not much was organised. Although interns in other departments had a lot more going on, particularly those based in the head office.
