The Role
Good as whole but the lack of structure and work was a disappointment.
Everyone was extremely nice and approachable. Team worked well together and there was never any conflict.
My line manager and branch manager were both really helpful however were both very busy so it was difficult to catch up with them or ask them questions sometimes. I had weekly one to ones with my line manager though and found the best way to ask her questions or for help was by email.
I was disappointed with how small the tasks were that were given; I'd complete them quickly and efficiently so would end up bored. This meant that I felt as though I was nagging people for more things to do. By week one I had completed most of the set roles from the work book we needed to complete by the end of the 7 weeks. I was often left to my own devices even though I asked multiple times for more work. I had to find a lot of my own tasks/projects to do day to day e.g contacting various people from other parts of HSBC for more projects. So, once I did this a began to have busier days and was able to go out of office to other HSBC branches/centers to carry out various projects. Best advice is contact as many people as you can and network!
Had to use my own initiative and often left to sort out problems and tasks myself. This was good in some ways as I felt I had the freedom to do what I wanted to do. For example, even though my internship was for Retail Banking & Wealth Management, I was allowed to have insight days within operations and corporate/commercial if I set them up myself which I loved!!
It was a great opportunity that I'll use to enhance my CV and I have learnt to be a lot more independent. I've met some great people including interns, managers and colleagues which I hope to stay in touch with in the future! Although I would have liked to be more challenged work wise I have learnt a lot about retail banking and HSBC as whole as well as developing my customer service skills. This has been a good foundation for potentially working within banks in the future and I hope to do the graduate management training scheme with HSBC but within their corporate banking department.
The Company
Everyone was happy and approachable most of the time.
The pre-internship development was great! Fairly relaxed and swift application process with a great intern weekend just before and just after the internship! However, when actually on the placement I felt like all the set tasks were too broad and there lacked structure.
The internship development days were very enjoyable and when on the internship everyone seemed happy to teach you things.

Probably wouldn't do another internship but the graduate schemes looks and sounds very good.
The Culture
All the other interns were great and we regularly went out and met up with one another.
Manchester varies in price for going out but most places aren't too dear. Lived at home so didn't have to pay rent etc
Manchester night life is like London but cheaper!
Intern days and fundraising projects.
