The Role
I really enjoyed my placement because the office I worked and the people I worked with were fantastic! I looked forward to coming into work every day as was genuinely sad to leave.
The support from my collegues was fantastic, they were extremely happy to help and answer all my questions and give me little projects to do on the side which was really good fun. They were really supportive of the charity work I did and just generally really inclusive in the office.
Obviously they are very busy but she was approachable and more than happy to give me feedback and chat whenever she was in the office and free
We had the booklet to work through which I used for the first week and a bit but due to the nature of the office i'm in, it didn't really apply so I soon just used it more as guidelines. My project was a REALLY big one though so that kept me busy and I had total freedom to pursue any extra projects I wanted to do so I was kept nice and busy. I can't ever recall a day I was bored or too busy that it was stressful.
It was fantastic, I was given the space and freedom to take on big projects, email whoever I wanted to get to help me and generally was able to make some actual changes in my office. I actually felt a valued member of the team and that I was being useful to the centre.
I haven't gone back to uni yet but I can imagine that this equips me with more general life knowledge and more about the commercial banking world. If I ever set up a business I think this will have been extremely useful. It's also made me really appreciate my summer holiday as you don't get one of those when you have a real job!
The Company
Really nice working atmosphere. There was always someone to talk to and my colleges took an interest in me and what I was doing. I was also always able to go over and chat to people about what work they were doing. It was a joy to be there and I really enjoyed it!
The training and induction was really good then you get put in an office which doesn't seem to really know what they are 'meant' to do with you. I was lucky that i'm very self motivated and that my office gave me an incredible amount of freedom to work with but I can imagine and have heard from others that there was a lack of structure in the internship. For me this was a good thing as it meant I could actually do useful things for the centre and have a free programme to work from.
The induction was more to train you up in the ways and ethos of HSBC. I think it's more fitting you round the company and not the company round you, but that's to be expected from a global corporation really.
I'm very middle ground at the moment, I LOVE my office and the people here and role but I don't know whether I can see myself with HSBC. There is a lack of flexibility whenit comes to people with a lot of ambition and I think that because it's a bank and very safe that they don't want people to push the boundaries or bee too creative so I don't know whether that's for me. Also I'm not 100% on the grad scheme set up so that's something I'd have to take into account.
The Culture
I was lucky that there were quite a few interns in the areas I was in and I made friends with that at the induction and then through meeting up with them and grads thanks to my grad buddy. The charity project also helped us socialise.
I lived with family so that was fine and didn't go out that much as I had to wake up at 6.45am each morning. Also the office I worked had split working hours so there wasn't a group pub trip at the end of the day btu the socialising in work time was good and also I went on a night out and office lunch so that was a nice opportunity.
It's a major city so pretty good but I mostly went out with family and their friends.
Probably but I was too busy with work and extra uni stuff so didn't really do that much outside of work and that.
